Decline of an industrial culture

In the foundry halls in Tangerhütte the decay is taking over. The halls are the nucleus of the youngest town in Altmark.

175 years ago, the basis for the flourishing of the farming village of Vaethen was laid to become the youngest town in the Altmark. That the Magdeburg merchants Helmecke and Wagenführ pushed with energy and the "hut on Tangier" at that time would shape thousands of people and a whole region, they probably had no idea at that time. The family of manufacturers not only created a huge company premises with its own estate, master - and coach houses, bowling alley, Rützenhaus (today Kulturhaus) and Kinderbewahranstalt (today the DRK center). She also created the Old and the New Castle in a twelve-acre English landscape park, which was also showroom for their own products. A real highlight, which was cast in Tangerhütte, is the art-cast pavilion, made in 1889 and made of more than 400 individual parts, which is said to have stood next to the brand-new Eiffel Tower at the Paris World's Fair. With a certificate of the Prussian king, who approved on 16 April 1842 a pit field at Weissewarte to reduce the turf iron ore in the Tangern lowlands, started in Tangerhütte everything. The first blast furnace was built where the industrial road is today. By and by grew around the first foundry larger halls and other buildings. Construction began in 1842, and on March 6, 1844, the first iron flowed.
