The place was founded at the end of the 12th century as a street village by the Witigonen. In 1185 part of the property passed to the Zwettl Cistercian monastery, but was bought back around 1250 by the Landstein line of the Witigonen. For 1261, the German place name Witingenowe is proven for the first time, the Czech for 1267. The Ägidiuskirche is occupied for the year 1280. In 1341 Wittingau was owned by Wilhelm von Landstein. For this year it is referred to as a city.

In 1366 the Lords of Rosenberg acquired Wittingau. In 1367 they founded the Třeboň monastery for the Augustinian canons, to which the Ägidius church was also assigned. In 1374 Wittingau had city fortifications, and in 1384 the owners donated a hospital. In 1395, nobles led by the Rosenbergs in Wittingau formed an opposition to King Wenceslaus IV. During the Hussite Wars in 1424 and 1425, the town was unsuccessfully besieged by the Taborites. In the second half of the 15th century, under Wok von Rosenberg, the fortress was expanded into a castle.

Třeboň is a town with about 8600 inhabitants in the Czech Republic. It belongs to the Jindřichův Hradec district in the South Bohemian Region. For a long time, the town was owned by the Rosenberg and Schwarzenberg noble families from South Bohemia, who also resided in the Třeboň chateau.
