The Noumerleeën are a miniature image of the entire sandstone region of Luxembourg's Little Switzerland. Almost all geologically interesting aspects of the region can be discovered here on a small area. There are numerous different layers of deposits and traces of weathering. The honeycomb weathering, which is reminiscent of honeycombs, is particularly pronounced. In addition to narrow rock passages (lux. Schlëff) and half caves, traces of historical use can also be admired. The remains of the Roman refugee castle Alebuerg are clearly visible on a rocky promontory and there are numerous traces of former kilns where charcoal was produced.

The rocky landscape of the Noumerleeën is part of the northwestern strata of the Luxembourg sandstone, which was deposited in the time of the Lias and later removed. The step slope rises steeply over the hilly marl landscape. The marl here is a mixture of clay minerals and dolomite, which was formed during the Keuper era 210 to 230 million years ago.
