Horneburg Castle seen here is just the modest remnant of the massive fortress complex from the Middle Ages. This is the east wing of the so-called outer bailey of the Horneburg, which was renovated in 1830 using existing building elements. Unfortunately, the private owner is now letting it fall into disrepair.

The castle of Horneburg is actually a mansion from the 19th century, which was built on the old parcel. The building is unfortunately not in a very good condition, it has been secured by the community only in a makeshift manner. The restoration is quite complex and so the castle serves as summer residence for a hornet queen and her state.
Originally built in the Middle Ages Horneburg was demolished after the 30 Years War. The moat and island are still largely preserved today.
