Fort Charlotte is a defensive fort on St. Vincent in the state of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. It was built in 1806 west of Kingstown. It housed about 600 troops and a battery of cannons, which were mainly directed into the interior of the island. Wikipedia

As Admiral Nelson’s fleet went into battle against Napoleon’s Navy, thousands of miles away, in Kingstown a fort was being constructed using slave labour. Completed in 1806, Fort Charlotte was named after the wife of King George III . Its guns all point inland because the commanders were less worried about a naval invasion than about the Black Caribs. These are descendants of the indigenous population and shipwrecked of escaped slaves.
