The Altmarkt is the heart of the city and its oldest square; the first documented mention dates back to 1370.
It was the scene of court festivals and bourgeois revolutions, and it had famous residents such as Heinrich von Kleist and Carl Maria von Weber.
And the Striezelmarkt has been held here since 1434.
Today there are numerous shops, cafés and restaurants around the square, as well as the Altmarkt - Galerie, Dresden's largest shopping center.

The Altmarkt in Dresden – it presents a new face in every season. It is the unspoken center of Dresden, a square that changes its appearance almost weekly – from winter magic to a summer volleyball tournament, anything is possible at the Altmarkt in Dresden.

Even as a Dresden resident, one is surprised by how versatile the Altmarkt is; its seemingly endless uses. Not long ago, it housed beach volleyball courts with meter-high seating for hundreds of spectators –
soon afterward, the sand is gone, for where a major tournament had recently taken place, a flea market has now been set up, and numerous people are ogling the junk, searching for one or two treasures.

The Altmarkt is arguably the oldest square in Dresden. First mentioned in 1310 under the name "circulus," it only acquired its name "Altmarkt" (from "Old Market") with the city's expansion and the associated construction of the Neumarkt around 1550.
After the bombing of Dresden in February 1945, only the Kreuzkirche (Church of the Holy Cross) remained of the ensemble of buildings surrounding the Altmarkt, and this was the only one to be reconstructed.

The current quarters, which surround the Altmarkt on the west and east sides,
were built in the 1950s.

The Altmarkt itself was rebuilt after the devastating bombing raids on Dresden starting in 1953. It now covers an area of 13,000 m².

It was the autumn market on the Altmarkt - lots of stalls with lots of things you don't necessarily need. Of course there was also food and drink - all in compliance with the Corona distancing rules.
