On the south side of the market square is the historic town hall, probably the most important and most beautiful building in the city. It was built in the years 1570-1572 by Nikolaus Hofmann from Halle / Saale and is considered one of the most important secular Renaissance buildings in southern Germany. Neo-Gothic elements can also be heard in the architecture. You can see a finely structured facade, the coat of arms of Emperor Maximilian II on the bay tower, the Schweinfurt city coat of arms in the claws of the double-headed eagle; underneath on the balcony parapet, the coat of arms of the seven electors. Allegorical figures on the gables. Changing art exhibitions in the entrance hall, a fountain in the courtyard.

The old town hall (also just: town hall) of the city of Schweinfurt is located on the market square in the middle of the old town and is a listed building. The old town hall is considered a brilliant achievement of the secular German Renaissance and is the main landmark of the city.
The building was erected from 1570 to 1572 as the town hall in the Renaissance style, in the course of the reconstruction of the town after its destruction in the Second Margravial War in 1554. The architect was Nickel Hoffmann, one of the most important masters between the late Gothic and Renaissance in Central Germany. It survived the centuries largely undamaged, including the Second World War, in which many buildings in the surrounding old town were destroyed by bombing.
