The Heidenmauer (sometimes 'Roman Wall') is the most famous Roman monument in the Hessian state capital Wiesbaden, the Roman Aquae Mattiacorum. According to current opinion, it was built around 370 AD under Emperor Valentinian I and is thus the oldest preserved building in the city. The purpose of this defensive wall cannot be clearly determined to this day, and the dating cannot be more precisely defined than generally in the late phase of the Roman Wiesbaden.
In the Wilhelmine era, the pagan wall was broken through to build Coulin Street and the so-called Roman Gate was added in the style of the time. While only a few sections of the wall are visible above ground, the gate, which was added later, is integrated as a visible monument into the urban structures of the 19th century in the Quellenviertel. The connecting arch to the Kaiser-Friedrich-Bad and the wooden top come from 1903.

Wasn't built in Roman times, but still nice to look at, it's just a shame that the cars drive through.

Next to the gate, a small cobbled serpentine leads down towards the pedestrian area. There are some relics from Roman times to see. The serpentine reminds a bit of Lombart Street in San Francisco

Although it is a reconstruction, it is true to the original and enriches the cityscape of Wiesbaden.

Today it is assumed that the Heath Wall was part of a Roman aqueduct.
Next to the Roman Gate, copies of stone tablets (tombstones and altar stones) found in Wiesbaden are exhibited in a small open-air museum.

In 1902, the remains of the Heidenmauer were breached for the construction of Coulinstrasse, after the city had acquired the Adler site in 1900. The then Wiesbaden city architect Felix August Helfgott Genzmer had the so-called Römertor built in 1903. The loss of the historical building fabric, which was already felt to be serious at the time, was to be compensated for by historicizing buildings that were as harmoniously integrated as possible.

Genzmer designed a viaduct with a main and side gate, an archaic staircase, towers and a covered battlement, which in its design with quarry stone masonry and the wooden construction was reminiscent of Roman fortress architecture.[29] The covered wooden structure above the street is a reference to the Trajan Bridge over the Danube from 103 AD.[30] Inspiration came from the Saalburg fort, which has been reconstructed since 1898, where, like the Roman Gate, ideas of Roman architecture at the time were mixed with motifs from medieval fortifications.[31]

In 1979, the crossing of Coulinstrasse, which had previously been inaccessible to the public, was opened up as a pedestrian crossing by adding a staircase on the valley side and a new footbridge on the mountain side. As part of a renovation of the wooden structure decided in 2012, these modifications were removed. The gate is now only accessible as a viewing platform as part of guided tours

The "Heidenmauer" (Heathen Wall) was long considered part of a defensive structure. More recent interpretations, however, assume that it is part of a Roman aqueduct dating to the third century AD, which carried water from the Taunus Heights into the city.

The Römertor (Roman Gate) was built in 1902 as a covered wooden bridge at the road breakthrough in the historic wall.

Copies of stone tablets from Roman times found in Wiesbaden are on display in the Roman Open-Air Museum next to the Römertor.
