Chrysolakkos (Greek = gold mine) is the name of a Minoan tomb building, located about 500 meters north of the Palace of Malia. To the west of the burial building is the necropolis of Les Pierres Meulières.

Chrysolakkos is a rectangular ossuarium or house grave with a north-south extension of about 39 m and west-east direction of about 30 m. It covers an area of about 1150 m² and dates from the Middle Minoan period. The approximately 2 m thick outer wall was built in the north and west of hewn stone. In the south and east it was built of upright stone slabs. The area around the necropolis was paved. On the eastern side, there were seven rectangular pillared bases, suggesting that there was a portico here. According to an archaeologist, Chrysolakkos is the oldest Cretan building and the oldest grave building in Greece made of carved stone blocks.

Inside the building were found about 40 rooms, some of which were used for funerals. There were probably a total of about 80 such rooms, which are no longer visible today, since the southern inner part of the building is heavily destroyed. Most of the rooms had no doors and were only accessible from the top. Inside one room you could find the famous bees of Malia. Approximately in the middle on the eastern side was found a ribbed altar made of stucco. He had a cylindrical recess for libations. At the northwest corner, outside the tomb, there was a stone kernos.

The small archaeological site is located in the middle of nowhere. It seems like not much has happened here in recent years. Unfortunately, you can't get into the area, so I'd recommend exploring the surrounding excavations instead.
