The fairytale lake is a lake at Rottenburg district Wendelsheim in the district of Tübingen. He got his name because of his miraculous emergence. The lake was formed by a flood of water over night. The Märchensee lies in a quarry that was operated until the 1960s near the Pfaffenberg near Wendelsheim. Sandstones of the reed sandstone formation in the Mittelkeuper were dismantled and can still be studied in walls several hundred meters long and up to five meters high. For some time he has been losing more and more water, as the surface has become more brittle over the years. However, the entire quarry is not covered by the fairytale lake. Part of the quarry is dry, there are other small lakes.

A green, impenetrable layer of duckweed covers the fairytale lake on the Pfaffenberg near Wendelsheim all year round. The romantic body of water in a small forest area owes its origin to a quarry that existed here until 40 years ago. Fine-grained reed sandstone, which was well suited for building, was mined in the quarry. The origin of the reed sandstone is explained by geologists with a large river system, which flowed through Europe more than 200 million years ago and flowed to a primordial sea in today's Alpine region. One of the arms of the river flowed along the edge of the Schönbuch, where Pfaffenberg and Heuberg are today.
