The oldest permanent crossing on the entire Weser and important for the trade in goods in the city.
In the Middle Ages, Höxter was the intersection of the Hellweg, which connected the Lower Rhine with the Harz region, and Bremer Strasse, which reached the Hanseatic city of Bremen from southern Germany via Frankfurt. These two long-distance trade routes and the Weser Bridge made a decisive contribution to the city's economic prosperity.
It was unrivaled on the Upper Weser until the 13th century. Now bridges were also built in Corvey, Hann. Münden and Bodenwerder. In particular, the Corvey bridge construction exacerbated the conflict between the abbey and the town of Höxter and in 1265 led to the destruction of the town of Corvey and its bridge.
The Höxtersche bridge was demolished by French troops in 1673 and a bridge could only be reopened in 1833. (Source: Höxter Tourism)

Excellent route to try if you want to long distant ride. Plenty of campsites, places to eat and interesting places to explore. If you're starting from England try the Harwich to Hook of Holland and start the trip from there. It goes to St Petersburg but Berlin is on the way.

Höxter has a great campsite next to the swimming pool on the opposite of the city.
