The town hall was built around 1250 as the center of the much older medieval market in front of the bridge. In the High Middle Ages, local products, e.g. B. in the form of leather goods and meat, sold and teeth pulled. In addition to being used as a market and cloth hall, the building served as a place of assembly and court. From 1608-18 it was rebuilt in the style of the Weser Renaissance and received the half-timbered structure. The richly decorated bay window with Justitia in the gable and the stair tower also date from this period. The then Ratskeller was so notorious for numerous bloodlust offenses that the guild members were forbidden to carry weapons. Some symbols of Corvey's rule over the town of Höxter can be found on the building: above the entrance to the Ratskeller, the head of St. Vitus and on the roof gables two weather vanes from 1764 with the insignia of the city lord, crosier, sword and abbot's hat as well as an image of St. Vitus.
