History of the "Sugarloaf"

A characteristic feature of the Siluette of the city of Hettstedt is a tower with a striking hood.

This is the Sugar Loaf also called the Witch Tower. It is an old fortification of the former city wall, which was built from 1423 to protect the city. The tower is located directly on the Harz river Wipper and has served various purposes throughout history.

When living space became scarce due to the rise of copper shale mining in Hettstedt, the tower was converted into a residential building, which also served as a prison. According to legend, in the Middle Ages women who were condemned as witches are said to have been lowered into the tower to starve to death. The name Hexenturm dates back to this time.

Until 1900, the building was used as a prison.
