In 1160, Albrecht the Bear, the famous askanian margrave of Brandenburg, gave the order to build a stone church. However, since he died soon afterwards, his son, Prince Bernhard of Saxony, became the builder of the Romanesque-style church. On December 12, 1201, the church, which was built between 1196 and 1200, was consecrated by Bishop Norbert of Brandenburg.

From this time, the foundation walls up to the level of the windows, the triumphal arch, the south portal with two Romanesque columns, the vault of the west exit and the tiles there as well as the sacrament shrine are still preserved. The four epitaphs date from the 16th century. They were opened in honor of wealthy Wörlitz citizens who had donated larger sums to the church

The church, which was built between 1196 and 1200, was consecrated on Christmas Day in 1201.
Prince Leopold III. Friedrich Franz von Anhalt-Dessau (1740-1817), who had the Wörlitzer Park laid out, had the Wörlitz Church rebuilt in this architectural style in the years 1804-1809, inspired by the English Tudor Gothic (neo-Gothic). The church got a transept and the tower was raised to 66 meters. The organ prospect, modeled on that of the Milan Cathedral, the galleries, the royal box and the floor date from this period.

Beautiful panoramic view from the observation deck of the Bible tower over Wörlitz, the Wörlitzer Park and adjacent areas. In the tower there is a spiral staircase, which becomes very narrow on the last piece (see photo). Small entry is required.
