The Canal Saint-Martin runs almost 3 miles (5 km) through the heart of Paris, joining the Canal de l'Ourcq to the River Seine. Its construction began in 1802 under the orders of Napoleon and ended in 1825, funded by a new wine tax.

The canal is a great place to sit by the water and enjoy a drink. It's popular with a mix of locals and visitors. There are lots of great restaurants and bars along the canal as well, like Le Comptoir Général, Chez Prune, and Point Ephémère.

The Canal Saint-Martin, with its nine locks, including double ones to compensate for the large difference in water level and with its high metal bridges and swing bridges, is one of the most rural places in Paris. Tall trees complete the picturesque picture. It used to be boats with sand and coal that sailed through the canal, now it is mainly boats with tourists.
