    I've passed by here many times and sometimes I stop and imagine how much effort this wall took and what went into building it.

    Was it perhaps the murder of Archbishop Engelbert von Berg by Count Friedrich von Isenberg in Gevelsberg? Or were they feuds between those from Berg and those from Mark?

    Anyway, I'm happy to discover such places that will eventually be forgotten for good! Maybe you'll come by here too ;)

        Landwehr, Landgraben and Landhege are border marking or border security works and enclosures of settlement areas with the right to enclose or entire territories. These settlement protection systems are mostly dated to the High and Late Middle Ages and in some cases are over a hundred kilometers long. However, comparable earthworks have been mentioned since antiquity. The Roman Limes is the best-known version of an early militia. The Danewerk also belongs to this group of barriers.

        These militias are still preserved in some regions - especially in forest areas - and are often protected as archaeological monuments.

        The construction of a Landwehr was an effective measure to protect the population of a settlement area or territory against attacks by neighbors or enemies in feuds or wars and to demarcate a legal district. The Landwehr were a means of limiting the probability, chance of success, effectiveness and consequences of medieval warfare and thus preventing them. They also prevented gangs of robbers from entering the area and made it difficult for them to retreat after raids. The combination of pastries and thorns was also good for enclosing cattle pastures and as a guide in hunting and wolf hunting. Wolf dens are often found along their course.

        Landwehr were also a spacious enclosure of forest and agricultural areas to protect the local population, who settled on scattered residential areas and farms within the protected area. The Landwehr gave the rural population protection in the same way as the population in fortified towns had through the city wall. But the fields of many towns and their surrounding outlying areas were often additionally given a ring-shaped landwehr-like enclosure, a so-called Stadtlandwehr, Stadthagen or Stadthege. . . .
