The mighty walls of this fortress were once to protect the Bressay Sund from the Dutch. The construction began in 1665 during the 2nd Dutch War, but was not completed. The fortress was completed in 1781 during the American Revolutionary War, but was never used for its original military purpose. The fortress is still almost 200 years old today.

Fort Charlotte is a fortress in the Scottish town of Lerwick on the Shetland island of Mainland. In 1971, the building was added to the Scottish monument list in the highest category A. It is also classified as a scheduled monument. The fortress overlooks Bressay Sound, which separates Mainland from the neighboring island of Bressay.
