The Kämpe (from campus = field) is located in the south of the city on an arm of the old Rhine. It includes original natural areas, such as alluvial forests. The landscape is structured by rows of trees and hedges. As an intact meadow landscape, the areas of the Urdenbacher Kämpe that are not diked are regularly flooded by the Rhine. The effects of the electricity over the millennia can be clearly seen here. The meandering arch of the Urdenbacher Altrhein corresponds roughly to the course that the Rhine had until the middle of the 14th century. At that time, Haus Bürgel, built on the remains of a Roman fort, was on the left bank of the Rhine. Due to a flood event, probably in 1374, the Rhine broke through the arch and created the bed it is today.
