The parish church in the center of Rerik was built between 1250 and 1270. According to tradition, a Danish queen founded the church. She got into distress off the coast and was rescued by Reriker fishermen. The square church tower with its eight-sided roof, also known as the bishop's cap, was once an important landmark. The parish church rises proudly from the old town of Rerik. According to legend, it was donated by Margarethe of Denmark out of gratitude for her rescue at sea. St. John's Church was built in 1250 during the transition from Romanticism to Gothic.
The size of the church and the quality of its architecture show that Rerik (formerly Alt Gaarz) once visibly towered above the importance of the surrounding villages. As a port, Rerik enjoyed special economic benefits that made it possible to build an elaborate church.
