In 1720 the prince-bishop Johann Anton I. Knebel von Katzenellenbogen (1705-1725), increasingly frail and suffering from gout, had a statue of the Madonna erected to the east of his residence, Willibaldsburg.

A legend tells of the portrait that the prince had it made from a log that had long been in front of the carpenters' entrance on Willibaldsburg and, although completely dry, had suddenly grown a branch with fresh leaves.

The statue, which was designated on October 28, 1723, was initially protected from the weather only by a wooden roof and wooden walls, and was soon revered by the population. Under Prince-Bishop Johann Anton II von Freyberg (1736-1757), the chapel building that exists today was built in 1738-1739 and consecrated in 1751.
