The dry slopes near Dollnstein are part of a nature reserve. The imposing Burgstein rock is one of the most famous rock formations in the Altmühl Valley. The 45-meter-high rock is not only a beautiful subject for photographs but also a paradise for climbers. The Burgstein rock is also number three on Bavaria's list of the 100 most beautiful geotopes.

The dry slopes nature reserve near Dollnstein is located north-east of the Dollnstein market between the Kalvarienberg and the Burgsteinfelsen. It covers an area of about 60 ha.
According to § 3 of the nature reserve ordinance, the purpose of protection includes the preservation and protection of the vegetation characteristic of the landscape to the existing extent, which is composed of semi-arid grassland, dry grassland, rock debris, dry-loving fringe communities and forests. The habitat, especially the soil conditions, should be preserved and the natural character of the area should be preserved.
