Finstergrün Castle is really worth a visit. Not only because we received a particularly friendly welcome, we were allowed to visit the castle free of charge despite Corona measures and outside of the official tour times. The staff in the Naschkasten (small café) were also extremely courteous. The castle with its numerous details is well worth seeing and if you read the story, it becomes clear why it is so well preserved. Families can also spend an informal adventure holiday here, with barbecues in the ruins and play supervision in the castle garden and a large playground in front of the castle.

The castle itself was probably built in the 12th century, but is now only preserved as a ruin.

In the Middle Ages, today's Finstergrün Castle still had names such as "Hous ze Ramungestain in dem Lungew" or "Veste Ramingstein". The name "Finstergrün" did not appear until the 17th century, back then as "ancient Schlössl Finstergruen". At that time the castle was already in serious disrepair. The name "Finstergrün" was not derived from the color green, but from "finstre Gruam" (dark ditch). This designation is likely to refer to the dark chasm next to the castle, which was even more clearly visible before the new castle was built.
In 1841 a forest fire devastated Ramingstein. Not only did he cause severe damage in the village, all the wooden parts of the "Feste Finstergruen" were also burned, which turned into ruins.
In 1899 the Hungarian treasurer and captain bought the burned-out ruin and had a new building in the style of the 13th century - using the same materials as then - added to the ruin (source and further details: de.wikipedia.org/wiki / Burg_Finstergr% C3% BCn)

Finstergrün Castle is the landmark of the Salzburg community of Ramingstein im Lungau, whose oldest walls date from the 12th century. Today it is used as a youth hostel and adventure location. More information about the castle is available at burg-finstergruen.at/ejoe.
