The monument for the republican politician Friedrich Ebert, Walter Rathenau and Matthias Erzberger consists of a base of piled up and mortared, unbehauenen Ruhrsandsteinbrocken and a tapered up, roughly hewn, about 2 m large sandstone, which is obelisk-like placed on the pedestal. The total height of the monument is about 3.50 m. Remains of an original inscription can be seen on the largest stone chunk of the pedestal on the front, as well as a small stone chunk of the base on the south side. On the obelisk-like sandstone are 3 metal relief plaques of the heads of the 3 politicians.
The monument was built in August 1926. The pedestal and the cornerstones date from this period. The original obelisk-like boulder and metal-clad portrait reliefs are lost. The large base stone originally bore the inscription: "Dedicated to the three great Republicans Erzberger-Rathenau-Ebert". The monument was erected by the republican Schutzbund "Reichsbanner Schwarz-Rot-Gold" and was a political sign of republican sentiment set in great interest by the population. In reference to the personal destinies of these 3 politicians, the struggle for the (Weimar) Republic was symbolically expressed.
The Republicans monument is a very rare sign of republican sentiment in Germany from the time of the Weimar Republic.
Due to its location in the "Volkspark" Hohenstein in a not particularly prominent, but only slightly elevated slope position, it also documents urban planning proximity to the population.
It is thus one of the earliest and rare democratic monuments in Germany. Therefore, it is also for general historical and especially city-historical reasons important for Witten.
