The port is separated from the Elbe by the Harburg port lock. The use of the port is currently in transition. Goods are no longer loaded onto ships here. Still a building worth seeing.

At the port lock the crucial difference to the Hamburg and the Harburg harbor becomes clear. The Hamburg decide in 1860 to an open tidal port to allow at any time free access. Harburg, on the other hand, expanded its long-standing port between 1845 and 1849 as a docking port on the English model. The dike and the lock ensure a tide-independent operation in the inland port.

The barrier locks in the port of Hamburg serve to regulate the tide and flood and protect against silting up. However, the Harburg port lock is used to adapt to the respective water level.

Ultimately, Hamburg's decision to open the tide port was the right one. Hamburg is still a seaport, while London as a docking port is no longer. The locks have become too small.
