The Sistig-Krekeler Heide represents one of the few remaining remnants, a formerly landscape-defining heather, acidic grasslands and wet meadows of the Eifel.

With the exception of the spruce forests on the edge, grassland areas and heaths with different nutrient levels and moisture levels characterize the area.

A few years ago this Garden of Eden almost happened because the farmers no longer cultivated the poor-yielding areas or planted them with spruce trees. But the rescue came on time. With the support of the Office for Agricultural Regulation Euskirchen, the NRW Foundation acquired part of the areas and removed the conifers. Now the areas are again being cultivated in a nature-friendly manner. The farmers responsible for the grassland do not mow the meadows until July, when the seeds of the early bloomers are mature and the late summer flowers are not yet in bloom. For nature lovers and passionate photographers, a visit to the NSG Sistig-Krekeler Heide is particularly worthwhile in June. In addition to countless bees, grasshoppers and butterflies, you will find many endangered plant species here. Over 2,500 specimens of the green hollow tongue grow here, which corresponds to about 80% of the total population of this orchid in North Rhine-Westphalia. However, the thousands of specimens of the spotted orchid are more striking. In addition to the colorful meadows, there are also species-rich nebulas with flowering arnica to be admired.
