The equestrian statue of Frederick the Great, also by the people called "Old Fritz", correctly King Frederick II of Prussia, was unveiled in 1851 on the occasion of the 111th anniversary of his accession to the throne. After the Second World War, the monument was temporarily placed in Potsdam, until it took in 1980 only a few meters east than previously its almost original place Unter den Linden.
Frederick II lived from 1712 to 1786 and was king from 1740 until his death.

Equestrian statue of Frederick the Great
The monumental equestrian statue of Frederick the Great at the Forum Fridericianum in Berlin's Mitte district commemorates the Prussian King Frederick II.
Created between 1839 and 1851 by Christian Daniel Rauch, it is one of the most important works of the Berlin School of Sculpture and marks the transition from classicism to realism. The bronze sculpture, which is 13.50 meters high, shows Old Fritz on horseback, dressed in uniform, ermine and tricorn hat, above the most important generals, statesmen, artists and scientists of his time.
Walled in during the Second World War, the monument was dismantled in 1950 by decision of the SED magistrate, erected in Sanssouci Park in 1963 and rebuilt at its original location on Unter den Linden in 1980 by order of Erich Honecker. During the last restoration in 1997-2000, the historic fencing, paving and lighting were also restored.
