There is a large parking lot next to the refuge. From here you can visit the nearby Liekwegen quarry with its Sorraia wild horses. Next to the refuge there is a nice barbecue area with wooden animals and an information board about the animals of the forest.

40 years of Brandshof refuge: 1996 would have almost been the end.
In its 40 years, the Brandshof refuge in Wendthagen has experienced numerous storms and celebrations - and was almost demolished in 1996. At that time, the nearby quarry was to be expanded - but the Wendthäger were able to save their hut.
