Just a short walk from the Mercado Mo-delo is the 18th-century Igreja N. S. da Conceição da Praia, one of the city's most architecturally remarkable churches, built into a hillside. As its name suggests, it was originally built directly on the beach, before parts of the bay were filled in. The 623-square-meter ceiling is decorated with the third-largest perspective painting in Latin America (1772), and the important organ from 1869 has been extensively restored.
