"The lock connects the Ruhr with the Ruhr Shipping Canal and the Rhine-Herne Canal. The last lock of the Ruhr before it flows into the Rhine is 310 meters long and 12.80 meters wide. Around 9,000 ships pass through the lock every year.
The nearby Ruhr weir has four weir chambers, each 30 meters long, and regulates the outflow of the Ruhr water and prevents Rhine water from rising up the Ruhr during extreme floods.

Ruhr lock and Ruhr weir Duisburg
The Ruhr lock at the Duisburg Ruhr weir is the last lock in the Ruhr before it flows into the Rhine. The lock and weir form a functional unit along the port canal between the Ruhr dike and the Pontwert port tongue. The lock was built in its original form in 1926, the weir with the massive walled pillars in its current form was built in 1948. In 1987 the lock was completely renovated. The weir not only regulates the outflow of the Ruhr water, but can also prevent Rhine water from rising into the Ruhr at extremely high Rhine water levels.
The Ruhr lock enables shipping on the Ruhr to the port of Mülheim. Freight shipping stopped upstream as early as 1890 when coal transportation shifted to rail. The Ruhr lock was equipped with a 310-meter-long chamber to enable towing trains to pass through. If smaller ships are to be sluiced, the lock can be divided into sections to save water and energy. It serves not only for shipping traffic on the Ruhr, but also on the Rhine-Herne Canal, which branches off from the Ruhr above the lock and establishes the connection to the Dortmund-Ems Canal. The Ruhr Lock is used by around 9,000 ships annually.
