For a long time, the Leuchtenburg was the seat of the judge of Kaltern.
In the 17th century, the facility's use ended and it was left to decay. Parts of the curtain wall and the palace with frescoes from the 15th century are still preserved. The climb to Leuchtenburg is very worthwhile because from here you can enjoy a wonderful view of Kaltern, Lake Kaltern and the Etschtal.

The Leuchtenburg is the ruins of a hilltop castle above Lake Caldaro in South Tyrol. It is located at a 576 m s.l.m. high elevation in the south of the Mitterberg in the area of the municipality of Pfatten and overlooks the Adige Valley in the area of Überetsch and Unterland. Wikipedia

The car park is small, arrive early in the tourist season.
Take note of the advice on ticks in the area
You can return along the forest road to make a circular walk.
Entry into the castle is by an unfixed steel ladder - take care!
Little remains of the the 15th centruy frescoes inside.

Beautiful castle ruins, great views of Lake Caldaro, Caldaro and Eppan and down into the Adige Valley. Picnic opportunities in the castle area, also good to go with children.
