In addition to providing protection from troops from the Zeller Bachtal, the tower also served as a customs station. At one point it was also used as an official prison. The tower used to have corner towers and a steep roof, which are no longer preserved. In 1899, a gate was broken into the tower and has since served as the lower entrance to the cemetery.

The unplastered, rectangular tower with a brook gate made of quarry stone was part of the medieval city fortifications. It served as protection from the troops from the Bachtal, which is why it is often called the "Bachturm". The tower measures 22 meters with its six floors and the ground floor.
