As the first channel 1687 the work channel was created by the Würm in Karlsfeld after Schleißheim, which replaced the 1601 dug up drive water channel (Würmkanal). In 1689 under Emperor Maximilian II Emanuel the Schleißheimer canal was built between the river Isar and the castle Schleißheim, to be able to supply the park of Lustheim and later the new castle (construction start 1701) with water. For this Aumeister water from the Schwabinger Bach, a tributary of the Isar, was discharged and guided straight to the north-northeast along the present federal highway B11. At Dirnismaning (Garching near Munich), the canal curves almost at right angles to the west-northwest and the Garching district of Hochbrück to the west. Today, the Schleißheimer Canal begins 2.7 km further north at the level of the Großlappen sewage treatment plant.

At this point, the main part of the water from the Würm is branched off with the Würm Canal and routed to Schleißheim in order to have sufficient water available there for irrigation. The Würm itself only continues to flow as a narrow stream.
