The castle ruins of the Mühlburg on the southern edge of the Thuringian Basin, together with the castle ruins in Gleichen and the Wachsenburg, form the probably most famous castle ensemble in Germany, the Drei Gleichen. The name "Gleichen" comes from the Celtic word "like" for rocks or the topographically similar situation of the castles on three cone-shaped mountains. The transfer of the name to the entire castle group has been documented since the 18th century. However, the three systems never had a common owner. Incidentally, the Mühlburg is the oldest castle in Thuringia.

The keep is 22 meters high and has a wall thickness of up to 2.7 meters.
The diameter is approximately 7.4 meters.

The Mühlburg is the oldest of the "Drei Gleichen". The prehistory probably goes back to 500 AD.
It is the oldest surviving building in Thuringia.

The Gleichen Castle including the outdoor area and the Mühlburg Castle Museums are only open daily from March to October from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. There is a lot to discover on the Mühlburg in the outdoor area.

If you have the opportunity to climb the keep of the Mühlburg with 80 stone steps and finally 10 steps on a steel ladder, you should use it - it's worth it. A unique 360 degree panoramic view from the battlements of the tower rewards the effort. Over the Schloßleite the view to the Wachsenburg, the Thuringian Basin towards Erfurt, Weimar (Ettersberg), Fahnersche Höhen, Gleichen Castle, Kaffberg and Röhnberg, Seeberg, Wechmar reservoir, Hörselberg, Inselsberg, Thuringian Forest, Mühlberg, Ohrdrufer Platte, Reinsberge, . .... Climbing the tower is only possible if the ticket office at the entrance to the castle is manned and the museum and snack bar are also open.
