The castle ruins of the Mühlburg on the southern edge of the Thuringian Basin, together with the castle ruins in Gleichen and the Wachsenburg, form the probably most famous castle ensemble in Germany, the Drei Gleichen. The name "Gleichen" comes from the Celtic word "like" for rocks or the topographically similar situation of the castles on three cone-shaped mountains. The transfer of the name to the entire castle group has been documented since the 18th century. However, the three systems never had a common owner. Incidentally, the Mühlburg is the oldest castle in Thuringia.
