On the headland in front of the former cemetery, a girl reaches out her hand to a seagull. This is, however, a new sculpture, the work of the sculptor Car, which was placed here in 1956 and became a symbol of Opatija. Until then, until a storm toppled it, it stood in its place, the statue "Madonna del Mare" by the artist Rathausky from Graz (he also created the "Helios and Selene" fountain in the park between St. James's Church and the Imperial Hotel). The "Madonna" was placed to watch over the soul of Count Arthur Kesselstadt, who disappeared in the pre-Easter waves not far from this headland in 1891. Countess Fries also lost her life during this excursion, while her son Georg was rescued.
