      The starting point of the railway line is Backnang station, which is elevated above the Murr. While the route to Waiblingen turns away from the Murr valley at its southwest end at the level of the federal highway 14 and swings to the south, the small Murrbahn runs to Ludwigsburg along the Murr valley and follows the many meanders to Kirchberg. The route then leaves the bottom of the valley and behind Erdmannhausen passes the watershed between the Murr and Neckar via a two-kilometre-long and up to eleven-metre-deep incision. Behind the adjoining Marbach train station, the former Bottwartalbahn leaves the route in a northerly direction. After 1989, the remainder of the line still served as a connection to the connecting railway to the Marbach power plant, but this has also been shut down in the meantime.

      After crossing the 335 meter long Neckar viaduct, you will reach Benningen, which is located in a bend in the Neckar. From here, the line is double-tracked (until 2010 only from Freiberg). In the Ludwigsburg-Backnang track, the siding to the Hoheneck substation branches off at km 22.0. Passing Favoritepark and after crossing federal highway 27, the route reaches Ludwigsburg train station. Today, the line ends here at the S-Bahn platforms via a flyover structure over the tracks of the Stuttgart–Bietigheim-Bissingen line.

        With the enactment of June 19, 1874 to release the funds, construction of the Backnang–Bietigheim tangential line could begin. The entire route was built as a single-track main line, but the route was prepared for a double-track expansion.

        During the construction of the line, there were some major problems: In the area of the deep cuts between Beihingen-Heutingsheim and Bietigheim, there were water ingress and landslides, as they proved to be heavily water-bearing. Three spring tappings were needed to drain the water, which were used to supply water to Bietigheim station. The Bietigheimer Wehbach grew significantly due to the construction of the line. Numerous animal remains from the Ice Age were found in the eroded masses of earth. The most complex structure on the route was the Marbach Neckar Viaduct, which was designed as a steel framework construction and had five openings over a length of 345 metres.

        The Backnang–Bietigheim line went into operation on December 8, 1879. The conversion made the Bietigheim station the second largest in Württemberg. The opening date of the Murrtalbahn as a whole was May 5, 1880 - this means that this new east-west axis went into operation before the completion of the Kraichgaubahn on August 7, 1880.

          Burgstetten is part of the Stuttgart Transport and Tariff Association. Burgstall (Murr) station is on the Kleine Murrbahn Marbach am Neckar-Backnang. With the opening of the extension of the S-Bahn line 4 between Marbach and Backnang on December 8, 2012, the community is connected to the Stuttgart S-Bahn network.

          The lines 388, 454 and 455 of the Regional Bus Stuttgart GmbH also offer a bus connection to Backnang.

          The nearest federal highway is the B 14, which runs about five kilometers east of Burgstetten. The nearest motorway junction is Pleidelsheim on the federal motorway 81, about 15 kilometers to the west.
