The castle was built as a fortified house before 1307 in the swampy Emscherbruch by Wennemar von Grimberg. The house served as a border fortress for the Margraviate of Brandenburg against the Electorate of Cologne's Vest Recklinghausen and the County of Cleves.

During World War II, the castle was severely damaged. Vacancy, lowering of the water table, and neglect left it a ruin by 1950, the structural remains of which were demolished down to the foundations in the 1960s.
