Nice entrance to the castle. With many stairs!
The Schloßsteig, formerly the Judengasse, is a connecting street between the Wettergasse and the Mainzer Gasse. At the upper end of the Schloßsteig is the small Willy-Sage-Platz.
There were Jews in old Marburg as early as the thirteenth, maybe even the twelfth century. Around 1280 there was already a small synagogue in Marburg, but it was destroyed in the great Marburg fire in 1319. In 1320 a new building was erected on the same spot, today's Willy-Sage-Platz. In 1452 the synagogue was then destroyed. In 1993, some well-preserved remains of this old synagogue were discovered by chance during excavations. In order to permanently protect the remains of the old synagogue, a glass cube was erected over the excavation site in 2002.
