The landmark of the city on the Limmat. Its mighty twin towers rise near the river bank. This is where Hudrych Zwingli began his German-Swiss reformation.

      Grossmünster, Zurich's landmark
The Grossmünster is a Romanesque church in the old town of Zurich, built between 1100 and 1220. The first altar consecration was in 1104 for the crypt and in 1107 for the choir. The final consecration took place in 1117 by Archbishop Bruno of Trier. Until the Reformation, the Grossmünster was both part of a secular canons' foundation and a parish church; the church's patron saints were Felix and Regula and Exuperantius. The graves with the relics of the first two, who are also considered the city's patron saints, were in the Twelve Apostles Chapel on the site of the current staircase. The Grossmünster parish was the starting point of the Reformation by Huldrych Zwingli in 1522-1525, and today the Grossmünster serves as the parish church of the Evangelical Reformed Church.
The Grossmünster, along with the Fraumünster and St. Peter's Church, is one of the most famous churches in the city of Zurich. The characteristic twin towers with their neo-Gothic spires from 1787 are the city's real landmark.

The entrance portals on both sides of the minster deserve a closer look. In addition to motifs from biblical stories at the main entrance, scenes from the life of the reformer Zwingli can be seen on the second double doors, the Zwingli portal.

The landmark of Zurich is the Grossmünster. Legend has it that the church stands on the former burial site of the city's saints Felix and Regula.

According to legend, Charlemagne discovered the graves of the city's saints Felix and Regula on the current site of the Grossmünster and had the first church built as a canonry.

In the first half of the 16th century, the Grossmünster became the starting point of the German-Swiss Reformation under Huldrych Zwingli and Heinrich Bullinger. The theological school attached to the monastery at the time became the nucleus of the University of Zurich.

The stained glass window by Sigmar Polke, the Romanesque crypt, choir windows by Augusto Giacometti, bronze doors by Otto Münch and the Reformation Museum in the cloister are just a few of the highlights that can be admired in the Grossmünster.

One of the two towers (the Karlsturm) can be climbed. For only 5 francs you can enjoy a great view of Zurich's old town. Be careful though, the ascent and descent is very narrow.
