In 1881, the owner of the Hotel Post in Sesto, Karl Stemberger, proposed building a refuge for the Alta Pusteria section of the Deutscher und Österreichischer Alpenverein, the Austro-German Alpine Club, at the Toblin pass. After an inspection of the entire section, all participants were enthusiastic about the unique view of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo, Monte Paterno and the surrounding mountains, and decided to build the refuge on the pass.[1]

Karl Stemberger took over the direction of the works, while the project was carried out by the president of the section, engineer Rienzner from Dobbiaco. The works began in the spring of 1882. In two months, the materials were procured and a simple one-story building measuring 4 x 8 m in cut stone with a pitched roof was erected. The small refuge included a furnished room on the ground floor, a brick kitchen, two tables, benches and some chairs. Next to it was a door that led to a second room.

The Locatelli refuge offers the best view of the Tre Cime. In season, there are long lines for the toilets (€1) and for drinks at the kiosk. It's recommended to reach it from Val Fiscalina, although a bit challenging, or from Misurina after passing Auronzo and Lavaredo.
