100 years after the city was founded, the Hospital of the Holy Spirit was built outside the city walls in front of the Bridge Gate in 1344 as a foundation of the citizens of Neustadt.

The main reason for the foundation was the pollution caused by the stream of pilgrims to the Cismar monastery. Believers hoped for miraculous and healing effects from the relic there.
