Hohenschwangau Castle, or Schwanstein Castle as it was then known, was first documented in the 12th century.
Until the 16th century, it was owned by the Knights of Schwangau and changed hands several times in the following period.
It was severely damaged during the Napoleonic Wars.
In 1832, the future King Maximilian II, father of King Ludwig II, acquired it and had it rebuilt in the neo-Gothic style under the direction of Domenico Quaglio.
The Bavarian royal family used it as a summer and hunting residence.

Since 1923, Hohenschwangau Castle has been owned by the Wittelsbach Equalization Fund.

Highly recommended and not quite as crowded as Neuschwanstein, but still very crowded.
If you're in the region, you might want to take a detour.
