The graduation towers used to be used to produce salt, but today it is an open-air inhalatorium by atomizing the radon-containing brine on the blackthorn walls.

In 2008/2009, 2/3 of the graduation tower was demolished and rebuilt so that visitors can reach the graduation tower at ground level. A stair tower was also built for maintenance work, with which the upper section should also be accessible.

The graduation towers, also known as salt works, for producing salt in Bad Münster am Stein have been historically documented since 1729. By evaporating the brine water dripping down the blackthorn walls, the salt content was increased before the subsequent evaporation (boiling).

Salty brine trickles down over walls of blackthorn hedges, which when it evaporates creates a fresh marine climate. This “open-air air conditioning” is a balm for the bronchi and respiratory tract and provides a refreshing fresh air zone even in the summer heat.
The west graduation tower, which was renovated in 2009, is 104m long and 10m high. The salt tower can also be climbed as part of a guided tour.
The graduation tower only goes into “hibernation rest” when there is persistent frost and is usually in operation from April to October.
