The Moulin l'Évêque, located on the left arm of the Meuse called Saint Vanne, is a place with a rich history dating back to the 11th century. This mill takes its name from Bishop Albéron de Chiny, who is said to have been responsible for its construction. Over the centuries, the site has developed and played an important role in the economic and hydraulic history of Verdun.
A mill was already mentioned in this strategic location in Verdun in the 11th century. Historical maps from the 16th century show four buildings on the Meuse, including the Moulin l'Évêque. At that time, the machine was used to grind grain using the driving force of water. The machine played an important role in the lives of the local population.
The 18th century brought major changes to the Moulin l'Évêque. In 1740, a major flood caused considerable damage upstream of the mill. To prevent future flooding and to limit silting, the mill threshold was lowered between 1740 and 1772.
