Named after the Götterhalle of Norse mythology, the Walhalla was built in 1842 at the behest of King Ludwig I. Here since the construction significant personalities of the Germanic language family are honored. These include kings, emperors, painters, composers and generals.

Here Ludwig I (and more recently the Bavarian government) tried to define what 'German' is with names and, in exceptional cases, events. The result is an interesting and sometimes almost bizarre collection. Especially when you compare who is standing next to each other and to what extent these people have a connection to Germany as it is understood today, you get food for thought.

This is an imposing "hall". Similarities with the Acropolis in Athens were certainly wanted when it was built. Opened in 1842 at the instigation of King Ludwig I of Bavaria. Approx. 250 important personalities as marble busts and memorial plaques are honored here inside. The name goes back to "Walhall", the hall of the fallen in Norse mythology.
