The striking leaf of the American Agave demonstrates its perfect adaptation to Sardinia's dry climate. The blue-gray central stripe contrasts with the yellow-green leaf margin, which is studded with sharp thorns. Agave americana, a neophyte from Mexico, found ideal conditions in the Mediterranean and has shaped Sardinia's cultivated landscape since the 16th century. The succulent leaves store enormous amounts of water and form a geometrically perfect rosette, from whose center, after decades of growth, an inflorescence up to 10 meters tall shoots up – the plant's final exertion before death.
