The memorial commemorates the nursery rhyme "Akai Kutsu" by Ujo Noguchi. The rhyme is based on the story of Kimi-chan. The girl's parents placed her in the care of an American missionary couple to seek a better life in America. Her parents believed she had come to America from Yokohama. In fact, she died of tuberculosis at the age of nine in a Tokyo orphanage.
