Approximately 25 meters northwest of the center of the temple complex is a water gauge, known as a nilometer. At Kom Ombo, this was a walkable, round well shaft made of large stone masonry, in which the water level of the Nile could be read using markings. In ancient Egypt, the results of these readings had a direct influence on the determination of the amount of taxes that the population had to pay. This was related to the water demand for agricultural irrigation. The more water was available due to a higher flood level of the river, the better the crop yields, which meant that higher taxes could be levied.
