Alpine feelings rarely arise in the Black Forest. The tranquil low mountain range generally captivates with gentle, hilly meadows and forests. But there are also places where good footwear, sure-footedness and a head for heights are required.

One of the most beautiful areas of this type is the Karlsruher ridge near Ottenhöfen, which can take on high mountain via ferratas and, thanks to the connection with the wild and romantic waterfalls of the nearby Gottschlag valley, is even more attractive as an excursion destination.

Makes a big buck! I traveled specially with public transport from Bonn, hiked the ridge and then took public transport back to Bonn in the afternoon / evening. A total of 11h train ride for 4.5h hike, but it was definitely worth it! I can only recommend walking a little further up the mountain after the ridge, cracking the 1000 meters of altitude and marveling at the many butterflies up there in summer!

The Karlsruher Grat is an approximately 400 meter long rocky ridge near Ottenhöfen in the Black Forest, over which an alpine route with climbing leads, which is also referred to as the only via ferrata in the northern Black Forest. Once at the top, you will be rewarded with a beautiful view.
