Scottish Highland cattle are mostly kept in the natural form of cattle farming, extensive suckler cow farming. The calves stay with their mothers and are suckled by them. Since the bulls are calm and sociable animals, they can stay in the herd all year round. If kept appropriately, they can be easily handled well into old age. Young bulls are kept in separate areas to prevent rivalry.

The animals can stay on their areas all year round. A stable is not necessary, but a covered feeding area for a secure supply of water and roughage is desirable.

The animals have low demands on the quality of their feed. They usually eat what grows on the pastures. This includes old and rough-fibered grasses and shrubs as well as woody plants. Any winter feeding can be done with straw, hay, silage or crushed grain.

Veterinary care is required for the regular blood tests required by law. Calves should be identified (ear tags) within seven days of birth.

The general management effort of a Highland cattle herd can be classified as low.
