The observation tower in the east of Lake Steinhude has an enchanted access path that is about 500 meters long. The view is fantastically beautiful and you can take a comfortable rest on the benches in the tower under cover. It is advisable to have a pair of binoculars with you for bird watching.

The Wunstorfer Moor, which covers around 650 hectares, lies east of the Steinhuder Meer, and borders the Tote Moor to the north. This moorland network is an important habitat for endangered animals and plants. Industrial peat extraction at the Steinhuder Meer has severely damaged the biotopes. Some areas have now been rewetted and renaturalized, and peat extraction is continuing in other areas.

There are only a few places in the world where peat bogs are found. They belong to the “primeval landscapes” of our earth. Bogs were formed where there was an excess of water for most of the year. Dead plant parts cannot be completely decomposed in this wet environment, so peat forms. Raised bogs are special habitats. They are low in nutrients and consist of 90% water. Only a few animal and plant species have adapted to these extreme conditions. They only occur in raised bogs.
